Description:In this essay we present an argument about the use of virtual environments to develop academic literacies in higher education. We first provide our thoughts on the globalized, knowledge driven context, and the importance than within it holds written language. Next, we go over the concept of academic writing in higher education, as a key element to develop the integration of students to the disciplines of their chosen professions. Lastly, we introduce the discussion of virtual environments as scenarios that can help bridge the distance between the students and the genres required in the institutional setting. The use of Minecraft as a virtual environment where to develop academic literacy in higher education is proposed. As closure for the text, two main reflections are wielded: one regarding the importance of digital literacies in the development of both students and citizens of the world; the other about the value and potency that exists in incorporating virtual environments through videogames as spaces for academic writing in higher education.
