Descripción:The article has as an objective to explain the different topics that have been investigated on the academic background of the School of Social Work at  University of Costa Rica, in order to understand the literature review about this and their different interests over the period of 1968 to 2014. Six trends were found  during the research that include various concerns such as academic practice, the students, the curriculum, as well as the emergence of the profession were identified. The analysis results allow to understand that throughout the study period, the investigative trends of the academic background have been expressed in a multitude of issues and interests, however, they do not emphasize a meaningful concern about it of the School of Social Work. Furthermore, these concerns have been addressed in the most research to superficial elements of the academic background and therefore, have failed to deepen their relationship with Costa Rican society and the local and regional settings capitalism nor with the basics of the profession.
