Descripción:The assaywas conducted at the Fabio Baudrit Experiment Station of theUniversity of Costa Rica, located in the San Jose district, inAlajuela, Costa Rica. The effect of drying the rice stubblewith glyfosate was measured, between June 2000 andJanuary 2001, in different periods before the direct plantingof the beans; on the control of weeds and the bean yield. Theapplication of glyfosate on the rice stubble and weeds, beforeplanting the beans or after planting, but before theemergence, allowed an adequate ground cover by the stubblesduring the critical competence period of the bean, whichreduced the presence of weeds and achieved high bean yieldswithout applying other herbicides. When the holding periodwas prolonged (30-45 days) after the glyfosate application, the ground cover was poor due to the advanced decomposingstage of the stubble. There was a larger presence of weedsand negative effects on the bean production when the weedcontrol was not timely.
