Deskribapena:Changes in soil organic matter (som) and available nitrogen for plants in the form of ammonium (NH4+) and nitrate (NO3-) were  evaluated  during  four  consecutive  cycles of flooded rice, in order to compare the systems direct seeding into stubble (dss) and conventional mechanized tillage (cmt). The experiment was established in the Pelón de la Bajura Farm, in the North Pacific region of Costa Rica. A contiguos-plot settlement with five repetitions was used to compare the effects of cmt versus dss. Soil samples from three different depths (0 to 5, 5 to 20 and 20 to 40 cm) were randomly obtained during the first 10 days after rice seeding and before any nitrogen fertilizer application. som content was determined through laboratory analysis. AlsoNH4+ and NO3- content were measured in order to determine the amount of available nitrogen for the plants. It was concluded that major effects of stubble in dss take place between 0 and 5 cm of depth, with more of 2,6 ton/ha som, 1,5 ton/ha organic C and 150 kg/ha of whole N than cmt.
