Descripción: | The Limon Earthquake (Ms = 7.5) occurred on April 22, 1991 with its epicenter located at coordinates 9,685 N and -83,073 W. The objective of this research was to study the relationship of the processes triggered by the earthquake on modeling the topography of the most affected area -the Southern Limon Basin. The methodology consisted on a literature review regarding the technical and scientific studies conducted about the disaster and the analysis of its geomorphological implications. The coseismic effects that occurred were the tectonic uplift, liquefaction, landslides, floods, and an increase of the fluvial system´s sediment load. This event was a great lesson for Costa Rica in terms of managing a major emergency, and it also helped building the foundation for emerging prevention measures and disaster risk reduction. |
