Clothing, Biopolitics and the Representation of Sexual Dissidence in Literature and Film: A Comparative Analysis

Miêu tả:Studies on film and its relationship with literature are among the most prolific fields of comparative research. This article presents a comparative analysis of the film The Mudge Boy (2003) and the short stories “Encaje” and “La mujer que, en mí, dormía” from the collection Atrevidas: relatos polifónicos de mujeres trans (2019) by using methodological tools from thematology and film semiotics based on concepts of clothing, gender, and identity, and the way gender identities are represented through the "dress" that each character wears. Both Burke’s film and Schumacher’s texts employ "dress" as a biopolitical mechanism (Retana, 2015) that controls the characters' lives (Foucault, 2007) in relation to the bipolar heteronormativity (Torras, 2015; Butler, 2006). These three cultural products evidence the representation of a dissident gender identity, where the sign of clothing exerts control over the relationships between their bodies, gender identities, and the social mandates expected by others of the protagonists.
