Popis:The present paper arises as part of a larger thesis project for the obtention of a Master's degree in Psychology. The objective of the research is to make a comparison between the academic engagement and disengagement reported by first-year university students according to socioeconomic levels. Academic engagement represents the degree to which students are involved in academic activities. Disengagement implies the presence of disruptive behaviors to the achievement of learning outcomes. The sample comprised 468 first year student from Universidad de Concepción. A comparative cross-sectional design with natural groups was used, segmenting students according to low, medium, and high socioeconomic levels, based on the mother’s years of education, and comparing these groups using the MANOVA technique. The results show significant differences according to socioeconomic level in behavioral disengagement, which implies the presence of disruptive behaviors regarding participation in academic activities, with students from higher socioeconomic levels presenting higher disengagement. This finding has not been reported in previous research and has implications for understanding the differences in engagement and academic disengagement in students from different sociocultural backgrounds.
