Descripció:This article aims to problematize the concepts of autochthonous otherness and idealized otherness implemented in the Costa Rican visual arts, of the late XIX and early XX, from an iconographic and poscolonial perspective. Autochthonous otherness is understood as the native/ original Costa Rican representation and imagined otherness as the European conception rooted in Costa Rican arts. For visual arts, this study, the work of Enrique Echandi a (Costa Rican artist) is confronted with the paintings of Thomas Povedano de Arcos a (European artist). At the end a poscolonial reflection is done on the conflict Echandi vs. Povedano
