Descripción:This paper provides an overview of the origins of etching as a graphic technique in European countries. It includes the first signs and representative artists from the XV to the XIX centuries. The methodological evolution of etching is assessed, starting from line engraving and continuing with the gradual incorporation of other processes like strong water, aqua tint. Additionally, the emergence of the first inscriptions in ancient prints is analyzed, since they allowed etching to go beyond an anonymous technique and become a recognized form of art. Furthermore, the essential steps for the classification and study of stamps are given. Lastly, the main denominations of original probes for contemporaneous etching are provided.
