Descripción:Historically, rurality has been related to economic activities that depend on the use of natural resources and which are carried out in remote places. Additionally, rurality has been seen as a concept and an imaginary dependent on the urban; the rural exists only because there is a space where the urban does not exist; concepts, where the rural is explained as  what is left out, as the other, that which begins where the urban ends. The author uses these aspects as a starting point, as this article reviews research works that analyze rurality, including its conceptual definition, the historical evolution of how socioeconomic relationships of its inhabitants are studied and understood, and various methodologies of measurement and classification of rurality. Based on this bibliographic review, a proposal of measurement and categorization of the rural and the urban is elaborated, including a new geospatial approach. The proposal includes a subcategory that has not been observed by this author in previous works carried out in the categorization of rural areas.
