Descripción:In 2011, a study was conducted with a sample of 524 third, fifth, seventh and ninth grade students from twelve Costa Rican rural schools in order to obtain information about student motivation towards natural and exact sciences. Findings include; that most of the students had never participated in a Science Fair; that students indicated a greater preference towards Math and Science with statistical differences corresponding to grade level and gender, that science instruction primarily consisted of teaching of concepts, and that students desire to learn more, principally in regards to biological sciences. The study concludes that the educational needs of the country require a greater involvement of the student involvement in scientific processes, understanding the importance of teaching Science as a process where students not only learn concepts, but also perform inquiry based learning procedures and learn how to effectively communicate investigative results. In addition, the formal educational system could benefit from incorporating a cross-curricular approach to the natural sciences through its curriculum.
