Composition, structure, and diversity of urban trees under contrasting management regimes in an industrial zone in Mexico

Miêu tả:In industrial complexes, green areas are typically evaluated primarily from an ornamental or functional perspective, while their ecological role within urban green infrastructure has been poorly documented, especially in the semi-arid regions of northeastern Mexico. This study provides evidence on how areas with contrasting management practices within the same industrial complex can differ in terms of the composition, structure, and diversity of their urban tree cover. In the summer of 2022, a complete census of woody individuals was conducted in a biodiversity conservation area, a mature tree stand, a post-fire regeneration area, and a parking lot. Dendrometric variables were recorded, and abundance, dominance, frequency, and importance value index were estimated. Additionally, taxonomic structure was assessed using the 10-20-30 rule, diversity using Hill’s indices, and floristic similarity using the Bray-Curtis index. A total of 322 individuals belonging to 20 species, 18 genera, and 13 families were recorded. The biodiversity conservation area exhibited the greatest species richness and the highest values of effective diversity, while the parking area showed the most simplified community, with only three species and a strong dominance of Fraxinus americana. Neither area met the 10-20-30 rule, indicating taxonomic concentration and dependence on a few lineages. The results show that industrial areas are not homogeneous green spaces, but rather internal ecological mosaics where management history, site conditions, and disturbance are associated with contrasting tree communities. The main ecological implication is that the management of industrial tree stands must consider not only the number of species, but also species dominance, evenness, and suitability to local conditions.
