The New World Screwworm (Cochliomyia hominivorax) and Recent Reappearance in Costa Rica: an update

Beschreibung:The Cochliomyia hominivorax fly is an endemic parasite of the American Neotropics and primarily affects warm-blooded vertebrates, causing myiasis by introducing larvae into open wounds. This fly has caused significant financial losses in the livestock industry and has even affected wildlife. Humans are also impacted by larval infections in the skin, eyes, ears, or through the ingestion of eggs. In the past, to eradicate it, the release of sterile males was used, a strategy that worked for over 20 years until the reappearance of infection cases in animals and humans in 2023. This article presents a bibliographic review to understand the morphological characteristics of the fly, the biochemistry behind its infection, and the proposed solutions, such as the use of sterile males and chemical molecules that kill or expel the larvae.
