Deskribapena:Structural diversity can be analyzed through different indices to know the effect of forestry on stands and tree species composition. The purpose of this study was to characterize the spatial structure and species composition of the tree layer under two silvicultural treatments in the Sierra Madre Occidental (seed trees or regeneration treatment and selection treatment). The information was obtained from 31 quadrangular plots of 2,500 m2. All trees that had a normal diameter larger than or equal to 7.5 cm were recorded. Each tree was identified to species level, and we recorded the diameter at breast height (cm), the total height (m), the azimuth (°) and the distance (m) to the center of the plot were measured. The density (N), basal area (G), degree of aggregation, mingling of the species, size differentiation and dominance were determined. A total of 12 and eight tree species were recorded for the regeneration and selection treatments respectively. The highest density occurred in the selection and basal area in the regeneration treatments. The diameter distributions showed an inverted J distribution in both treatments. The spatial distribution of the trees was different in both treatments; in the selection treatment the trees tend to be distributed more evenly, while in the regeneration treatment they tend to group. The selection treatment showed a tendency to produce purer stands. In both treatments there was low differentiation in diameters and heights. This study indicates that the residual spatial structure of these forested areas may vary depending on the treatment applied, and provides essential information for both science and sustainable forest management.
