Adjustment of the FMA+ and Telicyn Fire Weather Indices for Jipijapa, Manabí, Ecuador

Kuvaus:Fire weather indices provide relevant information that facilitates the assessment and communication of wildfire risk and potential fire spread. The objective of this study was to calibrate the meteorological fire danger indices Altered Monte Alegre Formula (FMA+) and Telicyn for Jipijapa, Manabí, Ecuador. To conduct this research, daily meteorological data (dew point temperature, air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, and precipitation) and forest fire occurrence records covering a six-year period (01/01/2020 to 12/31/2025) were used. Meteorological data were obtained from NASA Prediction Of Worldwide Energy Resources database, while fire occurrence records were provided by the Jipijapa Fire Department. A total of 173 days with recorded forest fire occurrences were considered in the analysis. The performance of the indices was evaluated using the Skill Score (SS) and Percentage of Success (PS) methods. After adjusting the danger classes, the following values were obtained: FMA+ (SS = 0.1154 and PS = 63.96%) and Telicyn (SS = 0.0983 and PS = 65.97%). The results show a relative improvement in the performance indicators of both indices after local calibration. These findings suggest that the adjusted scales more adequately represent the local fire danger conditions in Jipijapa and may serve as a complementary tool for risk assessment and decision-making in fire management.
