CHAYOTE CULTIVATION AND TOURISM: TRANSFORMATION OF THE GEOGRAPHICAL LANDSCAPE OF THE OROSI VALLEY, CARTAGO, COSTA RICA (1970-2012)

| Diğer Bilgiler: | This article analyzes the changes generated in the landscape of the Orosi Valley through the activities of chayote cultivation and tourism between 1970 and 2012. Both activities began to develop gradually and significantly in the region from 1970 onwards. However, at the beginning of the first decade of the 21st century, there began to be a decline in both their productivity and in the opinions of the inhabitants of the area, which were formed throughout the study period. Methodologically, the study draws on the analysis and interpretation of aerial photographs, semistructured interviews with people who were actively involved in the chayote or tourism sector during a specific period between 1970 and 2012, and mental maps created by schoolchildren from the Orosi Valley. These research techniques made it possible to reconstruct the process of landscape transformation in the region through oral history and historical cartography. |
