The Humorous Aspect of Adamance Coray’s Prilegomena to “Book I” of the Iliad

| Disgrifiad: | In this article, our objective is to study Adamantius Koraïs’ Prolegomena on the book I of the Iliad in order to show how a narrative containing humorous passages can contribute to the intellectual awakening of the Greeks living under the yoke of the Ottomans. The main character of the text is a priest from Volissos named Papa-Threchas, who makes the Prolegomena a literary text and, in particular, a true monument of modern Greek literature. He is a simple, philanthropic and virtuous priest from a village on the island of Chios, but lacking in elementary education. Throughout our study, we present and translate passages that highlight the humorous aspect of Papa-Threchas and consequently the intellectual elegance of Adamantius Koraïs-this intellectual giant from Paris, whose primary goal was to contribute to the intellectual, social and political emancipation of his compatriots. |
