Descrizione:This article evaluates several core elements of the dependency theory, although proved insufficient for justifying Latin American underdevelopment, some of its scenarios, especially those related to the social and economic consequences arising from foreign investment cannot be disregarded. Focused on the port of Golfito, in the southern coastal region of Costa Rica, this work intends to reveal the state of dependency created as of the social and economic control exerted by the United Fruit Company, and the way in which the socioeconomic impact, generated by the company’s withdrawal, negatively affected the region’s future autonomous development.
