Rocío Sanz Quirós and Emilia Prieto Tugores: Female Voices, Resistance, and Memory in the First Half of the Twentieth Century

| Descripció: | This article aims to analyze from a feminist approach the song Las coplas del Cholo Santa Cruz by Rocío Sanz Quirós and the engraving Mujer-cuerpo by Emilia Prieto Tugores as expressions of the absent presence of women in the Costa Rican artistic setting during the early twentieth century. The theoretical approach draws on feminist and cultural studies, particularly the concepts of symbolic exile and female silencing, engaging with Lara’s (2007) interpretation of Sycorax as a metaphor for the voiceless woman within patriarchal imaginaries. From a humanistic perspective, art is understood as a space of resistance, memory, and dignity, where female experience becomes a form of social critique. The study concludes that whether through geographical exile or silenced permanence, both Sanz Quirós and Prieto Tugores challenged patriarchal power structures and male privilege, upholding the need to reassess the Costa Rican artistic canon and to reclaim the legacy of historically marginalized creative women. |
