Kuvaus:This paper presents a theoretical approach to the study of the mythical narrative in ancient art. First we define the concept of classical mythology and its presence in Greek and Roman art. Second, we take an historical journey through the beginning and development of iconographic study in the field of mythology. Third, we focus on the definition and explanation of the visual narrative’s principles (characters, time and space), and finally we define and exemplify four methods of mythical narration (monoscenic, synoptic, cyclic, continuous) and five devices for making myth and characters recognizable in ancient art: inscriptions, iconographic attributes, unique characters, unusual situations and context.
