Kuvaus:Acteonellidae gastropods are described for the first time in Cretaceous deposits of the Santa Elena Peninsula in Costa Rica. Along other gastropods, the assemblage consists of five species in total. Two Acteonellidae species dominate the assemblage, Acteonella cf. A. coquiensis Sohl y Kollmann y Acteonella murcielaguensis n. sp., a new species of the fossil record, associated with further specimens of Calliomphalus? sp., Campanile? sp. and Trochacteon sp. Acteonella shells are much larger in size in comparison with those of other known localities. Height ranges between 11,3 and 16,1 cm and diameter between 5,2 and 8 cm. Such huge shell sizes could be due to favorable shallow marine and nutrient-rich conditions. However, high weathering and erosion of the fossil beds makes it difficult to determine with certainty if the Acteonella accumulation was just due to hydrodynamic reworking (i.e., by waves and/or storms) or rather an autochthonous accumulation. Planktic and benthic foraminifera point to an upper Campanian - Radotruncana calcarata zone (75,1-75,9 Ma) - to Maastrichtian range for the north Santa Elena Peninsula section, with the examined mollusk assemblage being highly likely constrained to Maastrichtian. This finding is relevant for the stratigraphic correlation among the different Cretaceous localities of the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico (e. g., Chiapas, Cuba, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico). Also, this Acteonella assemblage stresses the view of a global east-to-west surface current pattern across the tropical Tethys realm.
