Artistic Litigation: a Means to Give Voice Back to the Victims of the Santo Domingo-Arauca Massacre

| 實物特徵: | Introduction: As part of the public acts of recognition of international responsibility of the Colombian State for the bombing of the village of Santo Domingo, Arauca, by the Air Force, the sound installation Cantos Silentes en Cuerpos de Madera (2017) was presented as a symbolic remedial action. Objective: This paper analyses how the sound installation, created by Leonel Vásquez, accomplished what Yolanda Sierra calls ‘artistic litigation’ during the development of the public ceremony of recognition. Methods: A historical and contextual analysis of the reports issued by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights was carried out. Besides, the aesthetic and conceptual solutions for the creation of the work commissioned by the Radio Nacional de Colombia were considered. Results: The installation provided a space of expression for the victims, transforming the act of recognition into a court of conscience that questioned the official version by using sound and natural elements. Conclusions: This multi-sensory and emotive experience led to a greater commitment by the State and civil society to the protection of human rights. |
