Description:This research was born due to budget cuts suffered by the cultural sector in Costa Rica, as a financing alternative to the projects carried out by libraries. Its main objective is to describe the opportunities offered by crowdfunding as an alternative method of financing in public and academic libraries for the development of social projects. From a qualitative approach, a bibliographic review with a descriptive scope is carried out. Therefore, articles and theses on crowdfunding in public and academic libraries are compiled, through the table of analysis categories; the main points of interest for the investigation are interpreted. The results reflect the effectiveness and adaptability of the implementation of donation crowdfunding for fundraising in libraries according to their needs. It is concluded that in a campaign of this type, the estimated time for fundraising, the proper management of social networks, an excellent selection of the type and platform of crowdfunding, as well as the skills and competencies of the people involved should be considered. Library professionals must use the potential of ICT in times of austerity to take advantage of crowdfunding to execute more and better projects.
