Kuvaus:An apparently contagious type of skin lesion is described, hitherto unreported in Costa Rica. The disease has been observed in Finca San Antonio, near Cañas, Guanacaste. The lesion shows a sub-acute, inflamatory, necrotic process; it is externally delimited by a dry, hard, black or dark brown crust of woody appearance, closely adhering to the softer underlying tissue which penetrates deeply into the affected parts (fig. 1), and which has been observed to reach the visceral sheath of the peritoneum in at least one case. Lesions vary from an initial diameter of 2-3 cm to a maximum diameter of 20-40 cm. An odorless, lemon-yellow exudate is apparently. capable of spreading the lesions. Smaller lesions form in part which come in contact with developed lesions, such as the head, limbs or tail. The incidence appears to be from 1 to 2 per cent in the geographical region affected. Of 60 animals attacked, 48 died and 11 are in a period of recovery. The disease is now under more detailed publication.
