Sustainability of Low-Altitude Coffee Farming: Analyzing a Paradox

| Disgrifiad: | In this paper policies and strategies for lowland coffee production sustainability in Costa Rica are reviewed. The analysis takes place in the Nicoya Peninsula coffee producers as a case study, and ICAFE´s policy to promote competitiveness. Discussion is carried out from the Global Commodity Chain Approach and Sustainable Livelihoods to understand both the dimensions of production and life dynamics. Thus, it helps comprehending the effects of the international setting in the domestic production chain, throughout prices. The conclusion is paradoxical, low land coffee production has been strengthened due to price crisis. Competitiveness development comes from innovations, positive contribution to the environment, rural development and access to livelihoods. This happens in a context in which the needs of the lowland coffee production have been excluded from the public policies |
