| Description: | Introduction: This literature review presents the state of research in Costa Rica on state-run sex education as a social phenomenon. Objectives: To identify the main contributions and points of convergence in research on state-run sex education programs, in order to map the findings surrounding sex education as a social phenomenon and the current state of knowledge on this aspect of social reality. Methods and Techniques: Based on a search of available literature in Google Scholar and the institutional repositories of the National University, conducted between January 2023 and January 2024, 27 studies were identified and organized into four thematic areas, in order to identify their points of convergence and potential knowledge gaps. Results: Within the four thematic areas, various complementary contributions were found that highlight the knowledge gaps. Specifically, the lack of specific population perspectives is highlighted, as is the tendency to employ descriptive perspectives in perception studies and to address sex education as a whole, neglecting the particularities of each topic it addresses, as well as its context. Conclusion: Based on these findings, it is concluded that sex education is a growing field of study in the Costa Rican context, to which it is recommended to continue contributing from its different angles and research possibilities. |
