From Central America: The Federal Civil War Through United States Newspapers, 1826–1829

| Diğer Bilgiler: | The article analyzes the ways in which the events of the Central American Civil War of 1826-1829 were covered by American newspapers published on the east coast of the United States. In the four-year period in which the conflict took place, nearly 80 articles about the events were published in the newspapers of the northern country. Rather than covering events in a distant place, the publications intended to report on events that affected the commercial connections that had been built since the end of the colonial period between the Central American coasts and the ports of the eastern United States. The investigation is organized in three parts. The first explains how the development of commercial routes and the opening of new opportunities, starting with the independence of Central America, help to understand the interest of American publicists in reporting on the events of the war. The second part will describe the events that occurred between 1826 and 1829 and the way in which they were reported by American newspapers. Finally, in the third part, we will analyze the way in which the newspapers were shaping a discourse in which early elements that differentiated the Central American political project as inferior can be seen. |
