Beskrivning:Introduction. When using a visual scale to evaluate herbicide efficacy against wild oat (Avena fatua L.) in wheat crops, inaccuracies may occur because the values obtained depend on the observer’s subjective criteria. Objective. To evaluate digital instruments as an alternative to visual observation for measuring the effects of herbicides on Avena fatua L. Materials and methods. The instruments evaluated were the soil plant analysis development meter (SPAD) and the GreenSeeker sensor, which measures the intensity of light reflected by plants. Three wheat-producing areas with wild oat problems were selected during the fallÐwinter 2020Ð2021 growing season in the Mexicali Valley, Baja California, Mexico. In each area, an experiment was conducted using a randomized complete block design with six treatments: one treatment was the untreated control, and the other five consisted of acetolactate synthase- and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase-inhibiting herbicides applied against A. fatua L. The measured variables were the percentage of visually observed damage and the height and density of wild oat plants. Pearson correlation and regression analyses were performed using the values obtained both visually and with digital instruments. Results. In all three experiments, correlations were observed among all the measurement methods used. Each hundredth of a GreenSeeker reading corresponded to 2.66 % control, while each SPAD unit corresponded to 4.21 % control. Conclusions. The SPAD meter and GreenSeeker sensor can be used to evaluate the efficacy of acetolactate synthase- and acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase-inhibiting herbicides against A. fatua L. in wheat.
