A need for bioethical reflection on the relationship between transhumanism, bioart, and speculative design

| Descrizione: | Transhumanism is a philosophical movement that promotes human enhancement through biotechnologies, and is associated with the transformation of social, institutional, economic, and cultural spheres. It encompasses cultural manifestations such as biomedia art, as transhumanism is related to art forms that explore the modification or transgression of biological limits through science and technology. Similarly, both utilize speculative design as a tool to propose projects involving the manipulation of living organisms or the creation of new ones. This article analyzes the relationship between these areas of knowledge and outlines some bioethical risks that may arise from the unregulated development of biomedia art. It also proposes an ethical reflection on the scope and limitations that the application of biotechnologies in the arts and design should have. For this purpose, the theoretical documentary review and the analysis of the biomedia artwork GFP Bunny by Eduardo Kac are used as resources of critical thinking that allow for a deeper discussion. |
