Περιγραφή:The objective of this article is to analyze the origin and development of the area known as Pueblo Civil in the canton of Golfito during the period 1938-1962. To achieve this objective, the article adopts the theoretical framework of Commodification Frontiers developed by Moore (2013, 2020) and Beckert et al. (2021). Within this framework, the article examines the role of the Costa Rican State as the entity responsible for the creation, construction, and development of this area; the demands of the residents; and the leading role played by the National Institute of Housing and Urban Development (INVU) from its creation in 1954 as an autonomous institution responsible for urban and rural planning, as well as the construction of housing for low-income individuals in Costa Rica. The sources used are documents from the Costa Rican national archive, banana contracts from the 1930s, business documents from the Golfito division, memoirs of the INVU, and local and regional Costa Rican press from the study period.
