Description:Bulk density, tangential shear strength, resistance to penetration (with two types of penetrometer), gravimetric moisture and temperature at the surface and 15 cm deep, were determined in a soil planted with coffee. Three points were georeferenced inside a 0.4 ha lot in a Dystrudept located in Juan Viñas, Costa Rica. By comparing the 2 depths, significant differences were found only for the variables resistance to penetration (1.60 and 0.73 MPa with the penetrometer “Chatillon”; and 0.30 and 0.15 MPa with the penetrometer “Soil Test” ) and gravimetric moisture content (30.37 and 42.08%, respectively). Although higher values were also found on the surface for both the tangential shear strength (0.028 and 0.025 MPa) and for bulk density (0.98 and 0.93 Mg.m-3 respectively), these differences were not significant. The values of resistance to penetration of both types of penetrometer correlated positively with each other (0.65**). Bulk density and penetration resistance measured with the device “Chatillon” kept a positive correlation (0.41+), which agrees with the fact that both variables are used to diagnose compaction problems. There was also a negative correlation between penetration resistance and moisture content (-0.68**) and a positive correlation between the latter variable and temperature (0.41+). Based on the results of this study, it could be verified that the surface had a higher compaction that the 15 cm-depth, which can be related to the frequent human traffic on the plantation, as a result of farming practices carried out in the crop, and also because of the lower soil humidity values found there.
