Geopolitics and Central America: Ideas for an Analysis of some Intersections between History and Territories

| Diğer Bilgiler: | This paper analyzes from a critical geopolitic perspective, three historical milestones in Central America, namely: The independence and continuity of the colony; exports of coffee and banana; and political-identity Tensions. A qualitative and inductive approach is used, following the hermeneutical method for the treatment and interpretation of the data. As results, it is obtained that the debates on the region have focused on 4 aspects, namely: 1. The fragmentation of the isthmus for geographical reasons and the colonial order established by the Spanish crown; 2. The paradox of being a continental bridge and barrier for new trade routes urged by the European monarchies; 3. The problem of otherness reproduced by the Creole logic of power-accumulation and the agro-export model based on the cultivation of coffee and banana; 4. The history of interventions carried out by the United States in the region on those countries considered as a risk for their "manifest and doctrinal destiny". |
