الوصف:The development of devices capable of sequencing DNA from samples composed of various microorganisms has marked a milestone in their taxonomic classification. In the field of ruminant animal production, the genomic study of the rumen microbiome (metagenomics) and its relationship with the host's genotype has attracted researchers' interest. This is due to the potential opportunities to select ruminants that can pass on traits to their offspring that create more sustainable microbiomes for productive systems, such as improving feed efficiency and productivity while simultaneously reducing methane (CH4) emissions. The objective of this review was to present a selection of scientific literature related to microbiome analysis and its relevance as a potential strategy for selecting ruminants in genetic improvement programs. It has been concluded that the integration of metagenomic analysis technologies in rumen microbiome research offers new perspectives for genetic improvement in ruminant production. These technologies promote more efficient and sustainable productive systems with lower environmental impact.
