Popis:The main goal of this work was to reviewthe tools and laboratory techniques employed to studythe interaction of sugarcane and Sporisorium scitamineum(Syd.) M. Piepe nbr., M. Stoll & F. Oberw. (Ustilagoscitaminea Sydow), smut’s causal agent. The sugarcaneresistance to this disease is determined by several factors, among them the activation of several resistance proteins, andother related genes. This interaction has been studied withdifferent tools, such as histological techniques for assessingthe disruptions at the cellular level caused by funguspenetration; the biochemical ones used to detect changesin the composition of several antimicrobial substances, thehistochemistry useful to stain in situ specific proteins, andmolecular biology, which provides us with valuable tools todiscover the activation or suppression of transcripts duringthe interaction. These approaches contribute to the betterunderstandings of plant defense responses and to createmolecular bases for genetic improvement to be applied asindicator in molecular assisted programs.
