| その他の書誌記述: | Abstract: This work explores how Lima Barreto writes O Subterrâneo do Morro do Castelo, a series of chronicles that mixes fiction and non-fiction, to surreptitiously oppose urban reform in Rio de Janeiro, the city’s greatest socio-political, economic and cultural project of the early twentieth century. In his text, Lima Barreto legitimizes a legend about the existence of treasures hidden under the neighborhood, Morro do Castelo (“Castle Hill”). This strategy aims to attract readers, as well as assert his contested views on the symbolism of this emblematic place, and, by extension, the complexity of the city’s rich topography, traditions, history, and miscegenation. While Brazil’s economic and intellectual elite revered European ideals, striving to “beautify" the city’s urban exterior by demolishing remnants of its past, Lima Barreto emphasizes the interior value of its geography, ethic mixing, and historical memory. |
