Elite Ladies: Leisure, Luxury and Power in San José, Costa Rica (1930-1948)

| その他の書誌記述: | This paper analyzes some of the public expressions of women belonging to Costa Rican elite families, especially those related to the capital, San José, between the years 1930 and 1950. Since these women were confined to the private and domestic spaces of their homes, few public references to their lives are available, which, in turn, constitutes an example of the dominant patriarchal practices. However, through newspaper articles, it was possible to gain insight into their cultural life, particularly regarding weddings, parties, outings, and even education. These revealed the inherent complexity of the dominant bloc, especially its pursuit of distinction, as well as its dynamics of homogenization, endogamous marriages, satellite elites, and the importance of prestige, among other elements. To conduct this study, the research was based on the premise of Women’s History, which insists on the need to make women visible, including the use of their names. From this, the study sought to identify families and their main activities, while also analyzing short reports from the social section of the newspaper La Tribuna. |
