Popis:This article explores the usefulness, necessity and feasibility of applying geographic information systems (GIS) to study geohistorical processes with varying historical depth in regional case studies and comparative discussions. It addresses key concepts and their methodological implications, and presents three Latin American cases, with their operational concepts and certain technical aspects. Its conclusions highlight the relevance of a systems approach to territories at various scales and of understanding the functional dynamics of rural-urban linkages and gradients, for geohistorical studies of micro/meso/ macro-regional development processes. It also underlines the importance of collaboratively building historical GIS and systematically exchanging or publishing geographically referenced historical databases, dataverses, geo viewers, observatories, and other public means of knowledge management for area-based development at various scales, based on the principle of open science.
