Description:Through an enquiry about social representations of labor in call-centres, in Costa Rica, this article presents elements of a discussion with regards to the tension between the historical promise of growing welfare for workers thanks to labor, on one side, and the market, where labor tends to be consider as a factor of production and a commodity, on the other. The reach of higher education and its interweaving with labor are also discussed. It is concluded that said tension may be interpreted as an aspect of the resistance towards the market as the organizing institution of social life, within the frame of the style of development launched in the mid-1980s in Costa Rica.
