Popis:This article looks at the changesin the concepts used to write about emotionsin Urdu between 1870 and 1920. It arguesthat while emotions at the beginning of theperiod were still thought of as premised uponnotions of equilibrium and balance, whichaccorded a crucial role to the will and torationality, fifty years later concepts celebratedthe elementary power of emotions and theircapacity to overwhelm the individual. This canbe read as an indicator and factor of a profoundemotionalization of private as well as public life. The first section looks at ethical and pedagogicaltexts, the second at articles published in journalslinked to the reformist Mohammedan Anglo-Oriental College at Aligarh, and the final sectionat the reconfiguration of emotion knowledgethrough the translation and adaptation ofpsychological treatises.
