From Character-Object (Gender Determinations) to Character as Female Subject (of Her Recognition) in El despojamiento by Griselda Gambaro

| Diğer Bilgiler: | Introduction: Griselda Gambaro’s theater in the 1970s took a turn within a political commitment in which neo-avant-garde aesthetic served as a contextual backdrop to gender oppression. Objective: Analyze Gambaro’s monologue El despojamiento (1974/1991) considering the playwright’s own ideas compiled in a series of essays and lectures presented between 1972 and 2014. Critical readings of her theater from a feminist and gender studies perspective was considered. Methods: The oppressions of female character’s monologue are analyzed using Bertolt Brecht’s concept of “social gesture”, as well as Augusto Boal’s study on the Brechtian alienation theory. These tools will help to interpret Gambaro’s play from the perspective of the study of gender and theater in Cristina Escofet’s theories. Results: The character of La Negra has a dual configuration: the character-object that serves as an imposture that submits her to the gender oppressions permeating her life, and the female character-subject, whose subjectivity subtly emerges through the recognition of these oppressions. Conclusions: Gambaro’s theater of the 1970s critically portrays gender oppressions in relation to the historical and political context of the time, which was increasingly making them visible as an urgent matter. |
