Description:This document refers to the problem of gophers (Orthogeomysspp) in banana cultivation in Costa Rica. Different literaturesources agree that this rodent causes significant damage tothis crop, which can reach 50% loss. By overlaying maps ofgophers distribution and the banana-producing areas, areasof coincidence of the presence of some species of gopherwith banana production were identified. We analyzed thecharacteristics of the banana agro-ecosystems and its impacton the use of some signs that demonstrate the presence ofgophers, especially the mounds made by extending their tunnelsystems. Finally, we refer to various techniques that havebeen used to control this rodent, as well as the importanceof addressing the current legislation, because even when thegophers are considered pests, they are part of the wildlife, which is protected.
