Description:The author reflects on the bicentennial of Central American independence. The article seeks to understand the current situation of the isthmus, based on a confrontation with the past (juncture of independence) and some structural or longue durée trends that have crossed through the centuries. In summary, the two centuries that have passed since independence was achieved have left a balance in Central America in which the states have not been able to consolidate themselves, the political regimes have not been able to become democratized and the nations have not finished reinventing themselves.
