Particularly, economic sectors that depended on slave labor openly expressed opposition to attempts to implement restrictions in this business. Continuous changes of government, due to intense political and military struggle for power, prevented the development of a coherent long-term policy of abolition of slave trade but republican governments gave further impetus to this humanitarian purpose.
