Descripción:The article carries out a conceptual and contextual balance of architecture as an essential instrument, which is often overlooked at the historic interpretation level. The latter is aimed at proving that architecture has expressed and likewise influenced in the dialogistic, dialectic, and hence, historical relations between the dominant sectors and the subordinate groups of society in the different space-time settings. Also, based on this methodological proposal that highlights the need to include in the historical interpretation, the architecture’s symbolic-representative dimension and its relation both with the social construction of space as well as with the spatial construction of society, the paper also sets forth a proposal for the periodizing and study of the city of Cartago, Costa Rica.
