POPULISM: CENTRAL CONCEPT OF THE POLITICAL AND ACADEMIC DEBATE IN LATIN AMERICA

Beskrivelse:The debate on populism in Latin America has resurged due to the turn to the left in several countries in the region. First, this article analyses the ambiguity and polysemy of this concept, as well as the reasons for this polysemy. Second, it analyses the various periodizations that have been proposed to identify the stages of the phenomenon in Latin American political history, specifying the controversies generated by this periodization; and, finally, it gathers the elements of discussion, both theoretical and political, in order to define populism, as well as to explain the reasons for its causes and the appreciation that has been made of the populist phenomenon from the various social disciplines and from various ideological spectrum.
