Description:Using the Jia 家 or Family of Ba Jin 巴金 novel as reference, this paper analyzes the cultural conflict produced in the traditional Confucian normative system by the influx of the new ideas of modernity. First, it explains the context of the author’s life, and second the functions of this novel in its approach to these tensions during the first half of the twentieth century. The novel is set in the 1920s in Chengdu after the New Culture Movement
