Descrição:This article investigates the main sources of hope for the inhabitants of the city of San José, Costa Rica, between 1960 and 1980. It also examines how these hopes were expressed ideologically. For this purpose, attention is first paid to individual hopes, then to collective hopes, and then to political discourses linked to progress. In this way, one of the central arguments is that the causes of the affect of hope were highly influenced by the context of conflict between the ideologies of capitalism and communism, in a period in which the struggle between social democracy and neoliberalism was also beginning in Costa Rica. From a theoretical point of view, the concepts of hope and ideology are understood from the philosophy of Baruch Spinoza. In methodological terms, this work combines oral history, through the collection of testimonies from informants, with documentary review.
