Description:This paper discusses the relevance of the strategic trade policy in the economies in Latin American countries, who have signed several trade agreements bilaterally and multilaterally. These agreements limit the policies that can be implemented and mostly do not consider the countries’ specific circumstances. However, it is important to discuss the problem of dependency and its specific manifestations, especially when talking about the Latin American countries’ integration into international trade. The strategic trade policy really needs to be redefined to take global context into consideration and to implement policies that have trade impact on strategic economic sectors, based on a deliberate development strategy.
