その他の書誌記述:This paper shows how the Spaniards of Ciudad Real in Chiapas used the resources obtained from the encomienda of Indians, as well as from the slavery of these people, for their economic activities in the 1540s. For this aim, it explains shortly the characteristics of the encomienda of Indians in Chiapas of that time, and it reveals there were a gold rush —c. 1532-1548— and a rush toward sugar production —c. 1542-1549—, and in both economic activities, not only the labor of the Indian slaves, but also that of the Indians of the encomienda, played a key part. This study also makes a detailed analysis of the tax registries of the casa de fundición —smelter— in Ciudad Real of Chiapas in the 1540s, in order to demonstrate the evolution and the decline of the gold mining, and to identify the main owners of the mining enterprises in this province.
