Exploring the technological skills of public librarians in Capricorn District: Implications for digital service provision to rural dwellers

| Descrizione: | The purpose of this study is to evaluate public librarians' readiness to provide rural residents in the Capricorn District Municipality of Limpopo Province with digital library services. The central research question guiding this inquiry is: Are public librarians equipped to provide digital library services to rural inhabitants? The question is framed within the concept of ‘service quality’ from the DeLone and McLean information system success model (2003). The study employs a thematic and deductive analysis to align with its research objectives and structured approach. Deductive analysis was applied by establishing predefined categories, which were later used to classify and organize the data. Familiarization with the data was achieved through the interview process and the transcription of audio recordings. Transcription facilitated the coding process, enabling a simplified and focused examination of specific data attributes. The findings indicate that public librarians are indeed prepared to offer digital library services, provided they receive appropriate training and access to essential resources. These resources include smartphones, desktop andlaptop computers, online databases, e-books, telephones, stable Wi-Fi/internet connections, scanning devices, and adequate funding. The study also highlights several key skill areas requiring attention: digital literacy, user-support service, advanced information searching, online communication, presentation, computer operating skills, and digital information management skills. Assessing public librarians' preparedness to deliver digital library services underscores the commitment to bridging the digital gap and ensuring equitable access to information and learning resources for all member of society. |
